Writing Fiction - 5.13 Character Sketch
Assignment:
Jonathan was sitting in his room reading a book and listening to a very depressing music. School was over, he just finished high school and dreaded the day he had to go to university. He wanted to be an actor but his mother said it was a waste of time and he’d better do something useful first. He wanted to join the army but his father forbade it. He didn’t do well in his exams so he had to forget about studying athletic management or physical education, which would help him open a Taekwon-Do school. He felt overwhelmed.
His favourite song started and with its lyrics he snapped. A tear fell from his eye as he recalled the fight earlier this morning when he asked for help from his parents.
‘No son of mine has depression, this is bullshit. Get out of my way.’ barked his father and raised his hand to slap him, ‘Those books you are reading and that awful music are destroying you. If I ever catch you reading those books again I will burn them.’
If only he knew how metal helps me deal with my pain - he thought and raised the volume. The whole house was shaking and he head-banged the hell out of his pain. His long black hair was going round in circles and he sang as loud as he could, screaming and crying and flipping off towards the ceiling. His phone rang. He nearly missed it. It was his best friend Ryan inviting him over at his place. He put on a clean Iron Maiden t-shirt and army green shorts, took his bag, his book and phone and left without saying a word.
He took the bus to Ryan’s house. It was hot outside, he hated summer. It was late June and the sun was burning and the air felt muggy and still. He wished for some rain. When he arrived, his best friend was waiting outside his house and offered him some soda.
‘Rough day, huh?’ said Ryan and Jonathan looked at him with wry face, ‘You tell me.’ he replied.
‘Well, same here. What do you say we do something fun? Today is the Summer Solstice, remember?’
Jonathan agreed.
He was into Wicca lately and with Ryan they liked to learn more about magic. It was not satanic as his father thought, on the contrary they worshipped nature. The summer solstice, or Litha, is the beginning of the harvest, a time to honour the sun god and the pregnant goddess. Jonathan liked anything mystical but he would never harm anyone. He believed that Newton’s third law was useful for everything including life. For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. In Wicca’s case what you do comes back threefold.
Jonathan took a stick and drew a large circle in the ground. Before he joined the two ends Ryan stepped in and then he closed the circle as if he was shutting a door. Then Ryan sprinkled salt all around the drawn circle.
‘With this salt, I purify our circle.’ he said.
‘Thanks to the Goddess,’ they said in a strong voice ‘Thanks to the God.’ They started walking counter-clock wise in a circle.
‘Blessed be the Goddess and the God.’ said Jonathan and Ryan repeated.
‘Lady of the sun! Mother Goddess! We ask that you join us here this day in honour of the Sun’s power. Bless us and this day!’ Jonathan’s voice came out so powerful that he felt tingling in his spine.
‘Lord of the sun! Father God! We call upon you to ask that you join us here in honour of the Sun’s power. We ask that you help us illuminate our lives and show us our strength! Blessed be!’ continued Ryan and he felt like electricity was running through his veins.
‘Blessed be the Goddess and the God!’ they chanted together with one voice over and over again until they heard a thunder and the rain, that Jonathan wished for, finally fell and washed his pain away.
